About Jiu- Jitsu

"Jiu Jitsu is for everyone!" This is a common refrain you may hear if you spend time around the sport. That's because it was specifically created as a martial art for smaller, weaker practitioners looking to subdue bigger and stronger opponents. It relies very heavily on mechanical advantage to gain efficient power over your opponent, keep control of them, and if necessary finish the altercation with the threat of submission via joint lock or strangulation.

History of Jiu-Jitsu

The original "jujitsu," known as the gentle art, emerged as a fusion of various central martial arts practiced by the samurai in pre-Feudal Japan. In 1882, Jigoro Kano crafted Judo, the gentle way, by distilling elements from diverse traditional jujitsu styles, emphasizing high-efficiency throws, trips, and submissions to win with control, rather than brute force. This era of innovating traditional jujitsu also gave rise to Karate and Aikido. In 1913, Mitsuyo Maeda brought Judo to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, spreading it through prizefighting and teaching. Carlos Gracie, the eldest of the five Gracie brothers, learned Judo from Maeda and his Japanese students, later terming it "Jiu-Jitsu." Helio, training under his brother Carlos and being the youngest and weakest of the five, innovated further to craft modern Brazlian Jiu- Jitsu, a martial art focused on self defense. Its techniques allow a smaller, skilled opponent to defend them self against a larger stronger adversary.

"Jiu-Jitsu is simple, you just have to do it right." -Roger Gracie
